Next month supercar owners will spend five days partying their way through Europe. No, this is not the Gumball 3000…It is the Cannonball 2000. While the Gumball has become the symbol of people who have more money than brains, it seems the Cannonball is for those whose hearts are the size of their wallets.
The Cannonball 2000 is a race from London to Paris via Barcelona, Monte Carlo and Milan. Well, ok, calling it a race is a little stretch as the organizers admit this leisurely five-day/2,000-mile trip a “motoring lifestyle event”. But the reason why we want to feature it is because before participants go on their European tour, they are doing charity work. Cannonballers (at least that’s how they we known when we ran a very different outlaw race in the USA with a similar name) gathered at the Bond in Motion exhibition at the U.K.’s Beaulieu Motor Museum and volunteered their time and vehicles to children and their families from the charity Dreams Come True.
It will be hard not to mock the Cannonball 2000 for taking one of the greatest names in illegal road racing and turning it into an event for people rich enough to pay any speeding ticket. But since this is the first time one of these poser races is giving back, we may just keep to poking a little fun now and then.
