Given a choice, it would be hard to find anyone who would chose a Volkswagen Passat over a Porsche 911. Sure, both companies sprouted from the Porsche family loins, but they’ve obviously taken very different paths.
Years before Porsche played the role of the prodigal son returning home, VW’s Brazilian arm wanted to remind the public how its cars could be superior. Even as the Passat was receiving a new 1.6-liter engine in the early 1980s, the original 911 RS in this had nearly two and a half times the power. Still, this commercial makes a very good point on why the penultimate Porsche can’t pass the VW:
Even in Portuguese, the point is clear. Of course, economy still isn’t sexy.
