Here is a true testament to the power of social media. A company steeped in tradition makes a grand gesture to celebrate a milestone on Facebook. Aston Martin commemorated reaching one million fans by allowing their online admirers to create their ideal sports car.
The Aston Martin DB9 1M project began back in November when the company’s fans passed into seven figures. The devotees were allowed to vote on the car model and interior appointments of a car to celebrate the occasion. Aston Martin is very much a bespoke company, but they did not allow the FB crowd to go too crazy. So while there were likely plenty of fans who wanted built-in PlayStations and Ewok fur seats, interior specifications were limited to what was on hand at the factory.
The final step was a paint scheme. All candidates for this wrap incorporated the Facebook blue and white livery, and some even used some cues from Aston’s racing tradition. But it was the most avant-garde design, the Aero, which won the vote. Aston capped off the DB9 1M with a statement on the hood (bonnet) that reads, “True passion should be shared.”
The car was revealed last week at the company’s headquarters in Gaydon, England. They even invited some of their better-groomed FB crowd to share the unveiling of the 190k+ supercar. Of course, if it were us going to visit the DB9 1M, Aston would probably not be too happy that we were spending all of our time with the One-77 that’s lurking in the background.
We don’t know the future of the Facebook fan car. It is right-hand drive, and on temporary plates that can take it at least through the summer. So it is a pretty good guess that the Aston Martin DB9 1M will make an appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, and then pop up next at the Summer Olympics in London.
Ultimately we suspect this one will end up in private hands. The odds are that the wrap will eventually need to come off the body, and this car will pass through multiple owners. So don’t be surprised if in a few decades this bespoke Aston becomes an interesting barn find story.
